About us

Who we are: in 1983, several women saw the need for a safe place for battered women and children. They started the Family Crisis Center to meet that need. They obtained status as a non-profit tax exempt corporation in 1983. In the beginning, they used personal resources to fund the agency. In 1985, a 24 hour crisis hotline was established. A counseling center was opened in January 1989. The agency continued to grow. Early in 1996, The Family Crisis Center purchased the old Santa Fe Railroad dorms. The building was renovated to provide both shelter and office space. This greatly expanded the number of people that can be provided shelter. In 1997, two full time therapists were added to the staff to assist all victims of crime in the effort to move forward with their lives. The center is currently active with local law enforcement, district and county attorney’s offices, civic organizations and advocate groups which are represented on our Board of Directors to ensure survivors in our community are treated with respect and are made aware of all available resources.

Our goal:

The Family Crisis Center attempts to meet the needs of crime victims in our local community as well as the surrounding rural areas. We focus our efforts on victims of family violence and sexual assault. In 1996, our local service area reported 1,262 incidents of family violence. There were 70 reported rapes during the same period of time. Recent data suggests that only a small percent of either crime is reported. In 1997, The Family Crisis Center provided some type of service to approximately 2,000 individuals. Through our Primary Prevention and Educational Programs, it is our goal to break the cycle that surrounds the crime of family violence towards women, men, and children.

Our clients:

The clientele we serve is very diverse. Women, men, and children of different ethnicities and socio-economic status that are or have been victims of family violence and /or sexual assault. Most clients served are from Johnson County and the surrounding counties.
