SEXUAL ASSAULT

Sexual assault is any act of violence, either physical or verbal, in which sex is used as a weapon. Also sexual assault is any unwanted sexual contact or attention that may be achieved through force, manipulation, intimidation, coercion, violence, or the use of alcohol and drugs to impair the victim.   • The national Uniform Crime Report estimates that 683,000 women are Sexually Assaulted each year.

  • Sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes in America

  • Every minute in America, 1.3 sexual assaults are of adult women

  • 1 out of 8 adult women, or at least 12.1 million American women, have been the victim of sexual assault.

  • 61% of sexual assaults occur before victims reach the age of 18; 29% of all sexual assaults occur when the victims is younger than 11 years old, and 32% occur when the victims is between ages 11 and 17.

  • 1 in 6 men will experience a sexual assault in his lifetime.
